I don't really know what you mean by "the whole thing". I do not have GIMP, but I do use Photoshop, and the two are supposed to be almost identical.
You use Option - click to pick a sample area. The clone tool is a brush. If you have the brush set very large, it is going to clone all that is within that brush size. It will especially pick up areas you don't want if you move the clone tool around.
Also, if you have "aligned" checked, the clone sample will move in unison with your mouse, and can end up sampling in an area where you do not want it.

Select the clone tool in the tool box.
Hit CTRL+click where you want to set the target source. Then start painting to clone.
But it won't be any good for what you are trying to do.
What you need to do is make a selection of the dress with one of the selection tools. Then click Edit > Copy, open your other image and hit Edit > Paste > then Layer > New Layer.

1- You don;t use the clone tool for copying parts of an image ... the clone stamp is meant more to help fix parts of an image by sampling another part that is similar. An exampe is using the clone stamp on a scan of an old pic to slowly and painstakingly remove cracks or stains in the image.
2- Sure I'll do it ... my rate is 25$ an hour minimum 2 hours billed.
