I am being sold that particular lens in excellent condition for $80. Is it a good buy? I own a Canon Elan 7NE I would like to use it with. Obviously, I am not a pro, since I am asking such a question. Thanks.

How much does it cost new? That may tell you if it's a good buy or not.

It might be a good buy in the sense that a new one may run around $160 (I haven't checked lately; I'm just guessing), but it also depends on whether the lens is in good condition or not.

You did not ask whether it is a good quality lens (rather you only asked if it was a good buy). So as far as quality goes, you get what you pay for. It's not a horrible lens, but it's not that great either. I have one that I use on both my film and digital canon eos SLRs. I've gotten some really nice clear pictures (especially with film), as well as some bad pictures (though that may have been due mostly to my technique).

If the EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 III USM is on your budget ($one hundred eighty-a hundred ninety on B&H) then you rather've especially a lot responded your person question. The NON USM version retails for $a hundred and fifty-one hundred sixty (Imported vs US guarantee). See hyperlink for all variations. How sturdy are the lens? they're the perfect $a hundred and fifty-a hundred ninety lens you will get. they do no longer carry a candle to the $1500 lens or maybe the $3000 lens yet then while you're keen to pay $a hundred ninety you will possibly desire to no longer assume $3000 high quality. yet while your budget is maxed out at $a hundred ninety then there is not any longer something you're able to do (you could continually lease lenses once you circulate on journeys). Will you have the skill to get "national Geographic high quality" %. of birds, impossible yet its nonetheless an wonderful place to commence. somebody suggested the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM ($550) it rather is called a sturdy lens. Its have been given third gen image stabilization (IS) and its has extra suitable optical high quality over the 75-3 hundred III. yet once you could shell out $550, you additionally can purchase the EF 70-200mm f/4L (super lens) and once you could arise with the funds for it, get a a million.4x TC ($285) and you have 280mm f/5.6 that maintains to be extra suitable optically than the 300mm f/5.6 which you get with a 75-300mm III.

Nope. That is one of the worst lenses Canon makes...which is why it is so cheap.
