Your MacBook should have shipped with PhotoBooth.

If for some reason you don't have PhotoBooth or any other image editing package, then there is nothing you can do!

Did your camera not perhaps come with a basic image editing suite that you can install on your Mac?

Check your camera manual to see if perhaps you can't use your camera to do the conversion, but be sure to save a backup of your original image, preferably in uncompressed TIFF format (NOT JPEG) or RAW if possible, before you attempt any conversion.

ADDED: If all else fails, try and download an image editing suite from the internet. I think you can get a free 30 day trial version of Adobe Photoshop Elements from the web if I'm not mistaken.

I agree that post-processing can eliminate the traditional use of filters as thought of back in the day. Applying a filter in software may not be exactly the same, but it's close enough. The only filters I consider anymore are UV or skylight to protect the lens, and the ones that have no digital equivalent, such as neutral density or a polarizers.

Many programs that can handle pictures let you either click a button that makes it black and white or, you can lower the saturation until the picture becomes black and white.

There is also a free photo editing software that i use called paint.net however i am not sure it is available for macs.

If you're using any version of OS-X, it came with iPhoto. Import your picture into iPhoto. there's an edit button on the bottom. click that, then you'll see some tools pop up on the bottom. One of them looks like a black and white photo. click that.

Most photo editing software has a option to convert to a grayscale image. That's what I'd do.
