a friend of mine are having a debate (even though I have no problem with it) whether or not it was technically okay for her to edit a picture of mine that I posted on facebook and then re-post it on her facebook. She still accredited me as the original taker.

Copyright is a sticky issue. But it boils down to this, the person that makes a picture in most cases owns it. Just like if someone takes your car and uses it without permission, using images in anyway without permission is theft. It does however change if the image is released under special license by it's owner (for instance one of the creative commons licenses). The licenses vary each one is different so it's usually important to check with the original owner particularly if you intend to change the work or to use it for commercial purposes.

Now that's what the law says, in practice it's often pretty difficult to prove who owns an image. For photographs negatives and some digital files (RAW files which clearly indicate their creation date) might sometimes be enough to prove ownership of an image, however if the editing is very extensive, particularly if the "stolen" image is only a small part of the "theif's" final work, it may be difficult to prove that they stole your image. And since making a photo that looks alot like a photo someone else took is not illegal, it may well turn out that people will use stolen images in new work and there's little you can do about it.

Anyway morally and legally you should have permission, particularly before you upload or display prints made directly using other people's property.

It will be fine if she has your permission, and that she changes the pic so much that it doesn't look like the original pic. If she doesn't have permission or doesn't change it enough she could be charged with copyright infringement. My Graphic design teacher spent a whole week on this in class about what is considered ok.

When you are on Facebook It does not matter if you have it copyrighted. You can tag the photo and put it on another Facebook Page. The only thing is if you have a copyright symbol on it they have to give you credit.

It is considered copyright infringement to use anothers persons art work, photo, writing etc. without their permission. It is illegal and if you were taken to court you would be liable for damages. In addition to rather hefty fines that could be levied on you.
