Question:
How to avoid compression/file size reduction when editing photos in iPhoto and View NX 2?

I noticed that when I edited my photos in iPhoto, the newly saved file size reduces reduces significantly even though I only crop the image slightly, adjust levels and add a few effects. Similarly, in View NX 2, a Nikon photo editing suite, I cropped a photo by a few mm and slightly adjusted brightness and the file size reduced from 6.8MB to about 1.5MB.

As I would like to print these photos and frame them, I want them to retain their quality. I have not found any settings in iPhoto or View NX 2 that aid in avoiding the compression. Can I edit photos with minimal loss in quality without having to use more advanced editing suites?

I would focus less on the file size and the focus more on the pixel dimension you are left with after cropping. 300ppi is not a bad guide for adequate print resolution, though I've certainly been happy with many prints that were under that. How many pixels you need along each edge to reach 300ppi will depend on the size you wish to print your images at.

Editing jpegs multiple times will also hurt your image quality. I shoot and work with RAW images for that reason and export as a TIFF to work with anywhere else. I only convert to jpeg when it's time to upload images. If you want to work with jpegs, do all you editing at one time to minimize image degregaton.

Many don't realize that Iphoto does in fact work with RAW.

It sounds like your edit actions include a resizing mask in which you need to change the combinations. My immediate thought is that the image has been resized from 72 dpi ( Dots Per Inch ) to 300 dpi hence I would suggest you play around with the mask combinations.

As a rough guide my standard RAW image file is 12 Mb for a 14" x 9" A 300 dpi image but when resized to 10 " x 6.66" @ 300 dpi the file size reduces to 5-6 Mb; try the various combinations on your edit / resize mask and see the different file sizes which are generated.

In Nikn View NX2 I think you may find that the top display line includes a call to Nikon Capture - the software editing program - from which you can make numerous calls to editing features including ( at EDIT ) resize image.

Well not sure if this will help you now, but it might in the future: my photography teacher told us once that jpeg images lose data or pixels every time you open the image, so they would not be of great quality forever. She also said that the best format to save all of the data of a photo without any loss is TIFF, however this file type is very big.

Here you can find a free download of GIMP: [link]

GIMP is a free program you can use for a bunch ot tasks like photo retouching, image authoring and image composition. In my opinion it is the best free photo editing software on the market. It's not as powerful as photoshop, but it's free and can be augmented with plugins and extensions. These features make it the most advanced free photo-retouching software. GIMP can be used as a simple paint program or a complex image-manipulation software (thanks also to to a very advanced scripting interface)
