Question:
Best company to scan old photos?
2012-01-10 21:18:16 UTC
I have 1000+ old photos from the 1970's, 80's and 90's that I would like to scan into a digital format. I started doing this by hand on my HP All-In-One, but the quality was not as good as I would like... probably just getting old? I know there are several places that will scan the photos for me, but I don't have any idea which company would be best, cheapest, etc. Do the local stores (WalMart, Walgreens, ???) do a good job? I wouldn't mind shipping the prints if I can expect better quality without much additional cost. Advice???? Thanks - John

Most home scanners should be capable of giving you fairly good scans. Places like Walgreens or WalMart certainly won't be any better than you can make at home. A pro lab or commercial service might do better, but having 1000 photos scanned will cost you a bundle. If you have the time, it will be far far more economical to DIY, even if you have to buy a new scanner.

If you haven't already, go through your scanner manual and make sure you have the settings optimal to scan a photo. Scan at least at 300dpi for the size you expect to print. Some scanners have auto-correcting features to restore vibrancy on old faded photos. If you don't plan on "fixing" things yourself, some of these auto programs do a pretty good job. Good luck.

I had all of my childhood photos scanned by LiveOn Rewind (www.liveonrewind.com). They did it pretty quickly and everything looks great. I would start there. They give very personalized service and you can talk to the person scanning your photos - they contact you by email too to keep you up to date on where they are in the process. Hope that helps.
