i have photoshop 3.0 and i tried the overlay tool and it made the text lighter and the background darker.
then i tried the color burn tool and that kinda worked too, and it would work fine if it came out a lot darker, but it makes the text barely even visible.
is there another way to do it?

how do i do this?

I have Photoshop CS2 so I'm not sure if it's the same in 3.0 or not, but you can try this:

Assuming you have your photo on the background layer and a layer with your text on top of that, first make your text color black. In the layers panel, select your text layer and choose "soft light" from the layer blending options. Then adjust your brightness, contrast, and opacity to get the effect you want.

Hope that helps.

I wish I knew. It looks like reducing the brightness and possibly the contrast as well to draw your eyes to the text which are brighter with more contrast and brightness. Also thought that there was some kind of Gaussian blur applied as well. I was wrong. Umm something to bring it slightly out of focus. I tried increasing the contrast alone and increasing the contrast. Grasping straws I did. The text isn't the issue with me. That is created by typing in bold text, increasing font and arranging blah blah blah. Right click the text layer in your dialogue box you just created and click alpha to selection. Right click it again and delete it. You still have the selection. Right click inside of that selection and click copy. Open your original image in a new project. Right click and paste the selection you just copied. Make that a new layer. Well this is done with Gimp. Might be over-complicating. I could then increase the brightness and the contrast and make it pop compared to the back but in a subtle way so I didn't argue with the background or whatever. But to duplicate the image I couldn't. If you find out I would definitely appreciate a heads up through the Yahoo Answers message or you could just e-mail me at goergedave@yahoo.com. Wish i could be more help :(.

OK so you have your original image open in Photoshop.

1. Duplicate the image using CTRL+J.

2. Go to Image>Adjust>Brightness/Contrast.

3. Increase the Brightness of the new layer to a certain amount that you are happy with (maybe increase by 10% or 20%.

4. Write the text you want on the image (it will become it's own layer).

5. CTRL+CLICK on this text layer. It should create dotted lines in the shape of the text.

6. Select the second layer that you created before that has increased brightness. Hit the delete key.

7. Delete the layer you created with the text.

Hope this works!

Easiest way...

-The picture is on the background layer

-Then there is another layer that is all white above the picture. The opacity is lowered probably around 30% or so depending on your background image

-Then there is a text layer. Type whatever you want in whatever color you want. It doesn't matter.

-In the layers menu, make sure the txt layer is highlighted. Ctrl click (Command click - mac) the little square icon of the layer. This should put marching ants (a selection) around the outline of the text.

-With the text still outlined by the marching ants, click on the white layer in the layers menu.

- Hit delete/ backspace. It should delete part of the white layer, exposing the original pic underneath.

-You can deselect the text now and delete the text layer all together.
