Can anyone give me some idea's please in regards to taking your own self portrait?

I've got an excellent camera but I always find that when holding a camera out in front of me to take a selt portrait it always looks wierd (I think it's the whole too close up thing or something), where as some people tend to be able to take really good self portrait pics.

I always find that once I can get the angle right, taking the self portrait while looking in a mirror is better where you then look nice etc....

Though lots of people tend to be able to do them just by holding the camera out in front & for me, I find that quite difficult, either angles look wierd, skin looks bad or something.

I know that when taking photo's your not supposed to have the camera too close up anyway (like how professionals take photo's of people for example) cause it does create either wierd angles, blemishes or just generally makes the skin look bad, so whats the best tips for self photography please?

Obviously if you use a mirror, it has to be a good nice big & very clean mirror but again, any self portrait tips are much appreciated !!!

The camera should be mounted on a tripod or gorilla pod or hard surface on a bean bag (not hand-held by you). Select aperture priority mode and set to a wide aperture. Use off-camera flash (preferably set off to the side and slightly elevated). Either use the timer or a wireless remote to activate the shutter release.

Or, have someone else take a portrait of you with your camera...

shoot with the woods behind you. or go into the woods and sit doen and do a pose next the river. use them as a background. smile. dont shoot with your shoulders head on turn them a little in one direction. simple thinks like that will work. try a few poses that you seen on line and just see what works for you. keep in mind a lot of people dont like there own pictures. most people naturally think they may be bad when they are great. so take a few of each pose and see what works for you. also try changing your smile. maybe in one picture dont smile as big as another or not at all. some people look better when the dont smile and some people do so just go wit what works for you thats the main thing. if you are happy with it you know others will be. hope this works :-)
