I used an old film lens off my nikon fm10 onto my nikon d80. I'm only able to use the manual mode! Also It don't show my f-stop ( it looks like this f - -) I can't take a picture with the flash on either

I just got this camera and needed a lens, So what does this mean?

OK the lens will work on your D80 It should be an AF lens but if you are getting the FEE error message. This is totally normal with a CPU lens that has an aperature ring, when used on your modern DSLR.

You need to make sure the aperature ring on the lens is set to the smallest aperature ( usually 22) this allows the camera to set the aperature independently of the aperature ring. Some of these lenses have a small tab near the aperature ring that you slide to lock it at that aperature.

Your D80 will meter and work in P,S, A or M with any AF, AF-D,AF-I or AF-S Nikkor lens

If you are getting an F-- message remove the lens and check the contacts make sure they are clean and work. If that still doesn't fix it there is a pin that can at times get damaged and Nikon would have to fix this. Does the lens work on the FM10 ?

I hope this helps

Added: OK it seems they made an AI-s version of the Zoom Nikkor 35-70mm f/3.5-4.8 . If this is an AI-s version then it will not meter and will only work in M mode. But the AI-s version should have pre-dated the FM10

This is because the lens is meant for an old Film camera, and the lens control is all external, and must be controlled manually. The same happened with my 35-105mm lens. You can't control the F Stop, only the shutter speed, because that's not a job of the lens. You must use it in the M mode you don't have a choice in the matter

Also, the flash doesn't work either, because of the TLT flash setting, according to my Nikon d40, you should get a cheaper lens, like this 50mm f/1.8 lens, it's all automatic, i use it, and it's really sharp:

That lens was really only meant to be used with the FM series manual focus cameras. It is not an indexing lens, so it will not couple with the D80 meter but will work in manual exposure mode. There is no CPU, so it can't tell the camera what the aperture is set to, so you'll have to use the aperture ring as you would with your FM10. But, there isn't really any practical means of using this lens with your D80 aside from either trial and error, or the sunny 16 rule. The D80 will not meter with anything older than AF-D, and maybe center-weighted with AF (non-CPU), but not with pre-AI, AI, AI modified, or AI-s lenses.

It means the old lens is not an autofocus lens. Thats why you can only use manual mode. You need a newer auto focus lens. It will be marked with the letters AF like this 35~70mmAF
