The best one is the one which is best for YOU.

Has the facilities YOU require.

Has the accessories and lens collection YOU want

Is within YOUR budget.

The way YOU find that out is to go along to your camera shop and handle both, ask questions of the assistant (although they are normally pretty clueless and push that which gives them more commission) and basically make the choice yourself.

Both Nikon and Canon have the best reputations of cameras in the world, and both are Japanese so you can't go wrong. Nikon has a reputation for having better glass quality, but Canon is used a bit more in the professional field. Like I said you can't go wrong..except if you make your decision based on mega-pixels. MP size is overrated and both are adequate in that field Best

You might notice a little rivalry between these two camps, but the real answer lies in your own hands. Literally. Go to Best Buy or wherever and play with both cameras. Get a feel for them, take your own memory card along and rattle off a few shots from each camera.

You will find that you prefer one or the other. Your preference is the best camera out of the two.

Image-quality, accessory availability etc etc are on a par with these two manufacturers; so there's nothing to choose between them on those counts.

I do get the impression that Canon break down more frequently than Nikon.

This is all impartial advice as I own neither brand (not digital, anyway).

thats not a fair comparison,

that's like asking what's better a 1980 corvette

or a 2009 mustang.

the XTi is a REALLY old camera, if you want canon's equivalent of the D90, look at the 7D, or the 50D, or the Rebel T1i (the 7D and the T1i does HD video, a lot better than nikon does)

I have the Canon Rebel T1i, and I love it. There isn't really much difference just decide what brand you want to go with and stick with it. I was like you and sat and thought what camera do I want and I came to the conclusion that I had a canon point and shoot so I will just stick with canon.
