I am an ameuter photographer looking to expand my portfolio--on the road! Because there are thousands upon thousands of photographers, I feel so intimidated.
Here is my story- I travel with my husband and our daughter while he works on the road. We hardly stay in one town for more than 2 months. Which I feel will hurt what I am hoping to accomplish, but heres to hoping!
I am wanting to offer the towns we end up at, the opportunity to have photos made of their liking, whether it be family, couples, pets, ect.. Mini sessions if you will, at affordable costs.
Because I'm never at the same location for long, I am stuck as how to go about advertising. Having done research on the town we are currently in, I have failed to find an online page that allows people to offer their business. I feel that is a good way to advertise, such as Facebook. The two photographers I did find had their own website and a ton of experience. I do not wish to create a website until I have more sessions under my belt to show what I can do. How could I advertise limited time photography sessions while we travel?
Any tips would be appreciated!

You're trying to establish a niche for yourself. You didn't tell us how many years experience you have, if you're self-taught or have taken formal, organized classes... what equipment you own, lenses, lighting equipment, backdrops and stands (if any), etc. Admittedly, you're an amateur... amateurs don't rely on pay, remember?

Do yourself a favor, have some generic Photography business cards printed, leaving out the telephone and address (which you can print in or, if you have an old typewriter... remember those?... you can easily type the telephone and address for each place you move to.

You're risking a possible lawsuit by some slick and troublesome character who'll try to take advantage of you... it happens more times than you can ever imagine. So, look up photography contracts on the Internet and see if you can compose a contract to sign by those interested in having their photo take, or their children or pets (commonly known as "CYA"). I hope your skills are up to par for charging money; that's a priority in the business of photography, and there are far too many individuals that have NO business charging money, and giving the profession a bad rap (one young man here where I live did that; he moved out in the middle of the night avoiding being served with court papers after he ruined a wedding shoot)..

While your situation is challenging it is not impossible and don't let others tell you it is. When I started my business I had a potential client ask for samples of other plastic surgeons I had built a mobile app for. I was honest and said that he would be the first. He appreciated my honesty and did business with me. I would be happy to work with you to put together a plan to have you develop a following and expand that portfolio.

Amateurs DON'T charge. You are putting yourself at risk of being sued by pretending to offer a product that people will expect quality from. There are already too many fauxtographers out there who are charging when they have no business doing so. Please don't be one of them.

I don't see anyone hiring you.

You'd be a fly by night operation, literally. People want to know a photographer will be there to deliver the photos. They want to know that other people they now worked with them.

You're an amateur photographer.

Who isn't these days?
