10MP dSLRs start at around $500. The best ones come from Canon, Nikon and Pentax due to their decades long experience in making SLRs and their use of larger digital sensors. If you are just a beginner, they will be all practically the same so your only basis now would be price but it would be better if you were to handle each one first before choosing. You might get blown away by how fast Canon autofocuses, or how hefty those high-tech Nikons are or how bright the viewfinder of the puny Pentax is.

I got the Nikon D40 for about £250.

It's a brilliant little camera.

I used a Pentax ME (film camera) for ages but this is better.
