Keep it simple. A black wood frame. I assume the painting is on canvas. If so, use what is called a "floating frame". This mounts the canvas into the frame without the edges of the front of the canvas being directly against the frame, the canvas appears to be "floating" in the frame. Looks very, very nice and compliments the painting. Again, just simple black always works. NO mat. An oil painting is not framed like a photograph.

I would go with something like the frame on this page http://bartramgallery.com/framing.php these are burls and I would select one of the lighter woods of the three choices and potentially a black fabric mat. This will pull the lighter tones out of the image while still keeping the warm earthy tones and the black mat is to avoid a heavy contrast between the image and the frame.

Oil paintings don't look so good with a matte or mount - because the matte won't lie flat against the oils, since oil paintings usually have a bumpy surface.

Just get it framed.

I measured all of the photos I had in my domicile - lots - after which calculated the subsequent widely used length physique to accomodiate the %. Then I went to an paintings save and gave them the image length and the size of the physique i wanted to place it in. Wha-l. a.! suited fits! no longer extraordinarily high priced and this way i grow to be waiting to have all o.ok.frames and nevertheless shop the photos I had amassed by the years of scenes etc.
