I'm taking photos for a model and she requests the photos be 72 dpi, nothing else. Is this something I do when I take the photo? Or later in editing? I have no familiarity with dpi and that sort of knowledge, all I know is I take photos in large formats for better quality. Help needed asap! Thanks!

The rule of thumb for choosing the appropriate resolution setting is to use the one that will fulfill the needs of (all) the final output of the image(s). Typical computer screens are limited to 72 dpi. Higher resolutions will only be displayed at the maximum limitation of the monitor (72 dpi). Therefore, any information that exceeds 72 dpi will not be used.

You may however have multiple needs for your images. You may want to use them on the Web, but later print them in a publication at 300 to 1200 dpi. In this case you should shoot them at the highest level required and save them in multiple file formats.

many cameras can be set from 72 to 300 dpi. why, i dunno.. it does nothing but but change a number with in the camera and on the exif data about the picture. in pspx2 (and other versions) I can change this data to anything i want, from 1 to 1000 dpi and it has no effect on the image what so ever...

It is the pixels that make a picture, and all you need to make a good picture is 200 pixels per inch of print you wanna make. a 8x10 only need 1600x2000 pixels to look good..

some people think that if the pics are at 72 dpi they won't print out well, maybe she is thinking that. it is totally wrong tho and in many image editing programs this can be changed, so it really a moot point.

In editing.

In Photoshop you go to Image>Image Size, then change the resolution to 72.

you want "Adobe Photoshop" or equivalent image enhancing application to attempt this. In Photoshop, Open the picture from the menu. pass to edit>image length there'll discover 3 recommendations. a million)width 2)precise 3) dpi enter the wanted dpi i.e300 contained in the get entry to field adjoining to the 'dpi' selection. and which will be carried out. positioned it aside. All this if u have Photoshop. So, gud success.
