How do I make part of an black & white digital photo colour?
I have a colour image, but I want to change it to black & white whilst leaving some of it in colour. How do I do this using Jasc Paintshop Pro?

There are two ways to do it. I am a Photoshop person so I can't give you exact instructions, but I know you can do the same thing in PSP.

One way is to convert the entire image to B&W, then 'paint' the part you want in color. You use a transparent brush so you keep the texture of the object, so it doesn't just look like a patch of paint.

The other way is to take out the part you want to be in color, to copy it as a new layer. Then 'desaturate' the background layer (convert it to B&W), then merge the layers together and your object is still in color.

Step 1) The basic idea behind this technique is to use the history brush to reverse the black and white state that we will apply. Depending on you settings you will need to change the history states within the preferences. Open up the preferences menu Cmd/Ctrl + K and selection the performance tab Step 2) Load up the History Palette. Step 3) Load your image. Step 4) Go to Image > Adjustments > Black and White. Step 5) This is where the history brush comes in. Using the history palette select the original image from the left hand side. Step 6) Then using the history brush from the palette (Y) brush over the areas you want to be re-coloured. If you go out of the lines it doesn't matter. This is resolved in the next step. Make sure the mode is set to normal. Step 6) Then using the history brush from the palette (Y) brush over the areas you want to be re-coloured. If you go out of the lines it doesn't matter. This is resolved in the next step. Make sure the mode is set to normal. Step 8) Save out your image and you are done.

firts of all select image and change colour. then select black and white, then save witha different name so as you dont change the original. then go to customise and change the background colour. alternatively with balck and white photos you can enhance the tint in image, then change hue, contrast and brightness, it gives either pink or blue shades.

another way is when its is black and white take it to the printing mode and select the photo size then you can give it a sepia or blue background, something like fun prints in kodak will do this. Some printer options allow you to play with the photo before you print it.

Hope this helps.

Layers. Open the original color image, and make a duplicate (have your Layers palette open). Convert the duplicate layer to B&W. Then, use the eraser tool to erase the parts of the image you want in color, adjusting the size of the tool the closer you get to the edges. Merge layers, and do a "Save As" so your original remains intact. Like:

If you have the ability to cut part of the photo out with an edit tool and paste to another file. Then color the photo b &w then paste the color part back in.
