Things to know before a nude photo shoot.?

For my second year at college we have been given total creative control in our photography class, as long as we stay inside a set brief. I have my idea prepared and a friend has agreed to model nude for me as my subject. I have told her everything she would be required to do and she is comfortable with it. I have booked a studio in college and have seen her naked before so awkwardness is not a problem. Measures have been taken to ensure her privacy.

However I have never done a nude shoot before, I will be using a Lumix G3 camera and would just like to know if there are any tips or anything I should know before conducting a nude shoot.

Please answer ASAP as the shoot is tomorrow and I am having last minute worries that I have missed something...

Make sure she doesn’t wear anything beforehand that will leave a mark on her skin, like the elastic waist on underwear, or a bra.

Frankly, its a little late in the day to be asking questions. Here are some questions the answers to which should have been clearly answered before now: 1. Has the model provided proof of age such as a driver's license and have you photocopied that document and kept it on file? What is the legal age of ability to enter into a contract in your state and does she meet that standard? 2. Do you have a formal written contract that explicitly states the nature and extent of her participation to include a clear statement that she will be photographed in the nude and the purpose of the photographs to include any intent to display them to the public? Publication means showing the images to ANY third party for any purpose. This contract must be witnessed by a disinterested third party to include their signature on the contract. Have you arranged for an adult female to be present during the entire shooting session as a protection against possible charges of exploitation, coercion, intimidation, mistreatment, assault, rape, etc.? 3. Finally, is the person representing the college who granted you permission to use the studio fully aware of the purpose for which the college property is to be used, namely the photography of a nude female by a male student?

You are entering a minefield without knowing where the mines are much less the fact that they are there in the first place. I would encourage you to put this project on indefinite hold until you have addressed ALL of the issues enumerated above. By the way, there are several very good books on the legal aspects of photography. Go on Amazon.com and add a couple to your library.

It really comes down to what you want out of the photoshoot. Nude photos can be titillating, pornographic, boring, or uncomfortable, or some combination, or some other thing, all by design. Unless she has a lot of nude modeling experience, she is probably going to feel awkward, so you need to have a clear vision of what you want.

You also have to have a pretty good idea of how to work with lights. Depending on the lighting set up, you may have issues with pale skin that is normally covered, glare, and fatigue if you are working with hot lights. Try to book some prep time in the studio and do some test shot before she gets naked in front of the camera.

If your friend is posing just for you, the approach is really between you and her. Just be sure she takes off any clothing that can leave a stretch mark (watch, underwear, etc.) at least 15 minutes before the shoot, so it won't be captured in the resulting photos. One option is for her to disrobe completely from her street clothes and wear a loose fitting robe for that 15 minutes.

My experience is as a nude figure model for art classes and art groups, not a nude photography model. However, many of the same approaches may still apply, such as potential poses.

I am in the process of developing a comprehensive website to answer questions for those wishing to be nude figure models (aka art models, aka life models) called artmodeltips.com. If your friend is posing for your class, you will probably find much of the advice on this site helpful for your photography class.

Tomorrow? So no time for a beauty spa then. Both of you would have enjoyed that together.

Remember, a nude shoot is just like everything else, just without the clothes. So makeup and hair still is a must. Also be equally concerned with the shadows as you are with the light.

Photography with nudes is like every other shot. You want softer light to lessen the effects on the skin and you want a neutral background to focus on your center. Have her shower and be clean before she comes and warm her up with pics of her in her clothes so she's familiar with how you shoot and your directions.

Have a plan for poses, for the progression of one set to the next and be in control. If you don't know what you're doing or you lose confidence, she'll be upset and unhappy, waiting around naked. Take control and direct with precision.

Glood luck!

Common sense-wise:

>Make sure she doesn't wear clothes that would leave marks on body before the shoot.

>Make sure you decide how much nudity you want to show - worth looking into some nude photoshoots of professionals.

>Try making the photos interesting by different poses, props etc.

>Even though it is a nude shoot - don't include the ''private parts'' too much, as it is for school, not porn.

I hope you have it in writing from the head of dept and from your friend that they are both happy with the nude shoot, especially if one of you is under a certain age (18 in the UK). Best to get all consents in writing, you never know what might happen to those images in future, especially in the digital age. They could be twice round the Earth in a mouse click. Don't tell me that your data security is so good that such could not happen.

Have her wear a robe for at least an hour before the shoot so there are no marks on her. A very light coating of oil on the skin will give her a really nice sheen. Have fun.

Wax. Yes all that hair needs to go. Do it days before the shoot so the redness will have time to go away.
