Nikon D200.

Nice balance of features and cost. You will not outgrow this one for a while.

If you have any interest in film may I recommend the Nikon F4 with a 50mm F/1.4?

The best is going to be subjective but I'd suggest you need a digital SLR such as the Canon EOS 400d / Digital Rebel - it gives you creative and technical flexibility and control, which is essential if you're serious about your photography. You'll then need lenses of course! A good alternative is to buy second hand while you build your skills and keep saving your money until later.

I'd definitely go digital as you will learn more quickly if you have the benefit of instant feedback in terms of viewing the images and the histograms as you go (instead of waiting for a few hours or several days!).

The best software for editing is Photoshop.

I'd also consider setting some money aside for some training... an investment in yourself. But get a good course / tutor!!

If you want a lower priced camera that you won't outgrow quickly, check out the Fuji s9100. It has many higher priced features, like a hot shoe, but it is what we call a ZSLR. The lens does not come off but it has a great range and built in macro. No fussing with changing lenses or dust in the camera.

for film a SLR, for Digital a DSLR, get a Nikon D40x and a F4 and you have the best of both worlds
