Okay so i'm fairly well acquainted with the DSLRS that we have at school-Im photos editor of my school newspaper- and i am also in photos class. I want my own camera, I 'm not an expert by any means, but i want a DSLR that is not exactly for beginners, but not for complete professionals. Is there any camera that you know that would fit me for this purpose? Preferably Nikon? Please and Thank you!

If you would like cheaper cameras with good high-quality images, look into the Canon Rebel Xsi, the Pentax K-r, or the Nikon D-3100.

Pentax K-r (this one is black, but it comes in various colors.)

Nikon D3100 (This one is 20 dollars over your price range but it includes A LOT of additional equipment.)

Canon Rebel Xsi (not too suitable for taking group photos, but Ideal for sports and low- light situations).

the prices all vary, but they are exceptional cameras.

Also look into the Nikon D90. Its an incredible camera.

Do you have a price range? From personal experience, I'd say go used. Try ebay or some similar place that can give you some security. I'm not that familiar with Nikon but I know the D3000 (an older model that my friend uses for her photo business) is really good. They've released a new model the D3100. The D5000 is the next one up, but they have recently released the D7000 too which from the results I've seen are really impressive. Myself personal, I use an old Canon Eos 40D and love it. I would definitely recommend it or the 50D. Yes, the Canon rebel t2i has more mega pixels but the 40D have a magnesium body and if your looking long term, invested in the "L" lenses, can always upgrade to a better body like Canon 5d Mark ii. I'm assuming you've been playing with the different models and have come to like the feel of Nikon a bit better, but keep an open mind. I thought I like Nikon but ended up as a Canon guy. Good luck.

This is so weird, I was going to ask this myself last week, until I stumbled upon the Sony Nex-3.

Sony has a whole set of cameras (Nex) for those who are not quite pros and not quite amateurs. The Nex-3 was the one I bought because of its cost and lightness. The lenses are interchangeable too.

It's not exactly a DSLR, but it's good for someone who doesn't want to spend thousands on a camera. It also teaches you the best way to take shots if you want it to.

Check it out here:

Good luck!! I also bought the Canon G12, which is light and lovely, and I have the Canon Rebel eos DSLR from earlier, which I love but is quite pricey.
