As I recall, you cannot use bulb mode (remote trigger) with the self timer. In B the shutter will remain open as long as the shutter button is depressed.

They used to make a cable you could screw into the shutter button so you could actuate the shutter without touching/jarring the camera. You could probably still find one.

I just Googled "ae-1 shutter release cable" and you can still buy them: http://www.amazon.com/Remote-Shutter-Release-Cables-Cable/dp/B003HUF67W

This site has both the quick start and full user manual for the AE-1 http://www.butkus.org/chinon/canon/canon_ae-1/canon_ae-1.htm

I loved that camera. I had two AE-1 bodies that I used for almost 30 years. Enjoy it.

You are not understanding what the self timer does. It does not mean it opens the shutter for 10 seconds, then closes it. The self timer, when activated, allows a 10 second pause BEFORE the shutter will open. Once the shutter is activated, it will be open for whatever amount of time is set into the camera, such as 1/60 or 1/125 or whatever.

Some cameras will not allow the self timer to function with the Bulb mode. The camera has no way of knowing how long YOU want the shutter to remain open when it enters the Bulb mode, and so some cameras will not work in both the self timer and bulb mode. Some, however, will. I am not sure about the AE1.

But again, the self timer does NOT regulate how long the shutter is open, it only sets a delay before the shutter will automatically open by itself.

i think the variety is S3IS and in no way S315. in case you look heavily, there's a small button close to the zoom/shutter launch button. there's a small icon that shows multi images/timer. in case you press the button, it is going to shuffle between unmarried shot, diverse images and timer shot. To specify the size of the timer (2sec, 10sec or custom timer) visit the menu, lower than recording options, and also you may want to replace the self timer decision.
