Okay so I am looking for a photo editing software and am wondering what is the best one? And what do y'all think is the best and what y'all use? I looked at one place and it said that Adobe Photoshop Elements was the best and that Coral Paint Shop Pro was right behind it. but I have also heard that Paint Shop Pro was the best. And I am wondering are there more than one kind of Paint shop because I see a lot of paint shop's and there different so what is the best photo editing software out there? and what is the best paint shop editing software?

I have Photoshop7 and I love it. I can do so many cool effects with it, I am sure that the newer version have more tools that you can use but mine fits my needs. It has so many tools that I still find things it can do that I never knew it did. I have a blast with mine.

Sorry Martin, but the GIMP isn't the best - it suffers from a very steep learning curve. That excepted, it is extremely good. The best photo editing software is quite simply Adobe Photoshop's latest incarnation, currently CS5. Elements though is more than adequate for beginners, currently on version 9. If price is an issue, earlier versions can be found on Amazon quite cheaply, version 6 or 7 are reasonably priced. Photoshop CS5 is on sale at £666 or thereabouts in the UK, but a bona fide student can buy it for about £190.

I use Photoshop Elements 9, and it's the best photo editing software I've ever used.

I have personally found photoshop to be the best hands down. Photoshop Elements, although probably quite adequate for a beginner, does not have the full functionality that Photoshop does (CS5 being the latest version).

Gimp obviously has limitations a it is free and has nowhere near the functionality of Photoshop.

The Gimp is the best. Free & legal download (it's Open Source) at http://www.gimp.org

Added - I've got that Photoshop somewhere. The Open University provided it on disk with their photography course. It doesn't work with my operating system, Linux Ubuntu. However the lessons were easily followed using The Gimp instead. The learning curve must be the same in that case then, no?

Added - The Gimp has no limitations even though it's free and has all the digital editing functionality of all the paid for digital editors. Open Source is a brave new world people don't understand, try some Open Source software and see for yourself. I recommend Ubuntu for an operating system, The Gimp for digital editing, Open Office for office software, Firefox for a browser, etc...

Of course, you can just try The Gimp for yourself now, in a couple of minutes... It's a free and quick download, full version with full use. As someone said the full version of Photoshop is over £600, for the same thing as The Gimp.
