Some of the methods above are fairly good, but there is a much more professional technique which involves the use of high and low pass filters.

See this link below to see the full tutorial.

As you can see this is showing an extreme example. It is an excellent method and works 99% of the time without any manual 'tinkering'

The last guy was right, select the skin with the polyaganal Laso tool with a pt or two of feathering. Do it in several sections and abvoid the eyebrows, major facial feratures etc Gausian blur it mildly 2 to 3 pcs. (depending on quality dpi of image) Or rubber stamp or blur/smudge tool (finger on icon) if minor just beware of minor skin color changes.

Practice, you'll get it right. Try new things, play. There's 6 differnt ways to get the same outcome in Photoshop. Just find what works for you.

Oh my God !!! Please, please, please don't ever use the Gausian blur on skin in photoshop.

The tools you might use in the Tools Palette:

-blur tool - looks like a rain drop

-rubber stamp tool/Clone tool

#1 what are you trying to smooth out?

If you want to soften the skin up a little bit use the blur tool on a low strenght.

If you want to remove pimples, discoloration, scars, ect.. use the rubber stamp tool.

Check out the source below, it's pretty good.

Before you start, click on the image in the layers pallete.

Drag it to the little icon on the bottom of the pallete that looks like a piece of paper(on left side of trashcan). Then release the mouse button. This will create a copy of your image. Use the copy to work off of. You don't want to mess around with your original image.

Just remember to play with the tool strenght(Opacity) so the newly changed area doesn't look choppy or unnatural.Use the blur tool mentioned above to soften up any rough edges.

One way is to select skin areas with a generous feathering, then use gausian blur in those areas. Another way would be to use a diffusing filter.

Use layers Gausier blur and lighting effects. It is not easy.

smear it, so it sort of buffs it. but dont use pigment, that makes it really fake.
