I guess it depends on exactly what you what you want to accomplish as a photographer. If you are into nature photography the first thing that everyone thinks is that you have to travel to exotic places in order to be able to sell your work. That isn't necessarily true. There is often an over looked niche in your own area that you can exploit. Do you want to be published in Natural Geographic? Then you probably will have to travel. Would you be happy publishing a photo book that captures the beauty of your own state? Then you wouldn't need to do extensive traveling to achieve that goal. Maybe you would be able to help with the publication of travel brochures for your state or local area. Perhaps you would be happy selling your photos as pieces of art. These are all things that can be done without the need for extensive travel. If photography is really what you want to do with your life, you will find a way.

If you are a photojournalist you may be expected to travel, especially if you are working for magazines. If you work for the "metro" section of your local paper, then you will only travel around your town/region.
If you have a portrait studio or do wedding work, again, no travel.
As part of my job I review other photographers' work. I had an interesting experience a couple of days ago: A photographer showed me photos she had made in different parts of Latin American, then she showed me the work she made in the hospital where she worked. The hospital pictures were by far, the best. This was the world she knew best and even if unconsciously, she was able to capture something very close and authentic about the experience of that place. You do not have to go to an exotic place to make an interesting picture, but you do have to have a kind of passion about the thing you are photographing to make it interesting enough for others to want to see your work.

Most photographers are freelance... get a portfolio together (usually 10-20 pieces)... if you are doing this on your own dime, do it as a business. I have Incorporated (a C-Corporation) my business and all my expenses are tax deducible... that helps a lot because I would be spending the money anyways, may as well take it as a deduction... you can deduct more than just film, camera, travel expenses.. even things that you wouldn't think of, you can deduct - like your cable bill... yep, you can... you are a professional photographer and you need to keep up to date on the current photography and art specials that are on... there are so many reasons that are beneficial to doing this as a business rather then an individual... Good Luck!!!

No, you don't have to travel away from your comfort zone. Go to the park or nature reserve park nearest your home. What is important is how you compose your pictures. Try to include people in your hobby. They are more expressive than the trees, the flowers and the brook. Experiment with black-and-white photos to show your artistic side. Read books on photography so you can get tips on how to produce that beautiful National Geographic-like pictures. Good luck.

If you want to be a photographer, then you don't have to travel. If you want to get paid to take photographs of nature, then you would be hard- pressed to find such a job that didn't require travel. It all depends on who you work for, but in general: if you want to stay close to home, in your job as a photographer, then you're going to pretty much be limited to taking pictures at local high school basketball games and community events for a local newspaper or boring products for an advertising agency.

No you don't have to. There's plenty of nature wherever you are, and a photographers job is to find beauty in things most people wouldn't notice until they saw it blown up in a picture. I've wanted to be a photographer, but I'm not sure what I want anymore.
