I own a few cheap cameras that wouldn't sell anyway, so i'm thinking of interesting projects or uses for the cameras and lenses. I could give the working ones away, but what about the broken-beyond-hope ones?
Go Nuts! Its wide open.

You already said they were cheap cameras to start with so forget the idea of trying to sell them as broken for spares as cheap cameras are simply not worth repairing. If they are made of plastic you could smash them up and make an interesting collage out of the pieces. That's a project you can think about the next time something really frustrates you as you'll probably find smashing something up can be a therapeutic stress reliever and think of the unique piece of "art" it could create. :-)

The simple answer is that a lens, fixed is best but zoom often more practical, but generally such lenses have a way of using a different aperture (F number.) which helps you to improve your picture be being more able to chose where is the most important area is by focusing on that point which is the point of making the picture. The wider the aperture the more light is let in but the focus is more sensitive and so is where you look at in the picture first ! Hope i`m not giving too many secrets away but a good portrait often is one where a wide aperture has been used for although the full face may not be crystal sharp this does not really matter as long as the eyes are really sharp for its those `bright` eyes that make a portrait. (If you are going to be giving away any lenses then let me know, I have plenty of old cameras they will work on).
