I have my original picture as a layer, then I make a new layer, so I click on it, and go to File>Open and I select the file I want as that layer, and when I open it up, there is a whole new photoshop that replaces the one I was working with earlier with only the picture I had just opened. What do I do?

Very easy to do. While you have your original photo open ( in a layer or otherwise... ) then open your new pic that you want to put in a layer. Go to select>select all. Then make sure you have the top move tool selected, then while this image is on top and it is selected with the marching ants hold down the shift key, click and hold down your left button on your mouse, and drag the new photo on top of the other one that is open. This will completely put it on top of the other one in a layer, but now you can go and adjust the opacity, or the blending mode so that bits and pieces can show through from top layer to bottom layer.

I hope that helps!

After you open the second file, you have to copy it.

SELECT>ALL ... EDIT>COPY.

THEN click on the new layer in the original file and click EDIT>PASTE.
