DPI (dots per Inch) is the resolution of the PRINTER, not a digital picture file which is PPI (pixels per Inch), the two are different, they work differently.

PPI works by changing the size of the pixels and your computers doing it to your picture files all the time.

DPI is set up in the printer driver and determines the matrix of dots the printer will lay down. A 10" X 8" print at 300 DPI will have a matrix of 3000 dots X 2400 dots. (10 * 300 X 8 * 300).

When printing the best results are when you match the 'matrix' of the file to the 'matrix' of the printer. You do that by altering the PPI, the smaller the print the HIGHER the resolution needs to be, the smaller the print the LOWER the resolution.

Photoshop works in PPI and to alter it go to Image>Image Size and alter the resolution there. Only at 6" X 4" does the PPI match the DPI at all other sizes they will differ.

What program are you using? If you have Adobe Photoshop you can change it. Go under Image - Then click on Image size. If you don't have Photoshop, a scanning program should have an option to change the photo's size. However, if you're trying to increase a 72 DPI photo to a 300 DPI one, I really don't think theres a way to do that. At least none that I know of! lol Is there a way you can re-import the photo? That might be the only solution I can think of for you. I hope some of this helps.

For digital images, there's not really much point in changing the dpi. In fact you can't actually change the dpi in an image editor because dpi is only relevant when it comes to printing your image, but you can change the ppi (pixels per inch). Again changing ppi alone won't have any actual effect on your image's size at all. If you want more pixels you actually have to resize or resample the image. It can be done in most image editors like Photoshop, or GIMP. Image editors like Photoshop (not free) and GIMP (which is free) use ppi as though it were dpi, and it will effect the size of your image when it comes to printing it.

You can get GIMP here: http://www.gimp.org

To scale an image and adjust the ppi in GIMP, click Image > Scale Image. Type in the new ppi resolution. Change the image size units to inches (not pixels). Change the print size to the size you require. Click Scale
