Because you can just extract any still frame from the entire video so you don't have to retry taking shot after shot trying to get it perfect. With video it has much more pictures to extract from the video because a few seconds already has a lot of videos? Or is picture quality from extraction from video lower than just taking a normal photo directly?

Still photography and video are two totally different things and one is not "better" than the other overall.

As for pictures extracted from video. They will not be anywhere near the same quality of a still picture.

You do not have nearly the amount of control over white-balance, contrast, exposure, depth-of-field, or focus while shooting video. Also, a frame of video (even 1080p high-def video) will have a resolution of less than 1 megapixel, which you cannot even print a decent 4x6 off of. Furthermore, while it doesn't look like it while you're watching a video, each frame is quite likely to have a lot of motion blur.

So if you actually want to do anything with your photo after you take it, especially and kind of printing, you'll need shoot a still photo, not extract a frame from a video file.

Video frames that look crisp while playing, may look blurred as a still as there are dynamics in moving pictures that you wouldn't see in an still. One reason a flash is used is so only a momentary instant of time is captured so there is no motion or blurring.

If you've the right digital camera, set it up to take 5/10 shots per button press so you can choose the best ones - this is better than grabbing a still frame from video.

In my opinion, I think both are good, but still photos are better.

It's a pain having to have the video put on disk, and then having to set up the dvd player just to watch it, when you could easily just look at a photo album, or look at your wall with photo frames on it.

Video will allow you to watch exactly what happened on that day, but if you were to take a video of every event in your life, you'd NEVER have enough time to watch them all, but photos are much simpler. :D

the quality from a still frame photo would clearly be better, but beauty can take many forms and in some cases video tapping an event would surpass one shot.

idk if you've seen american beauty, but the boy who goes around filming everything, i must say i loved the bag video. but thats just one example.

a video still frame will not produce the kind of quality one can achieve from a high quality photograph.
