I don't think that is 100% correct Rick in all cases.
Lightroom has its fans, but its not necessary. Personally I cannot stand it.
The solution that works for me is to pick the files I want to work with in the manufactures software in this case ViewNx2 adjust the temp if needed and convert to tiff.
Open the tiffs in ACR and fine tune with tools that are very powerful. ( ACR in CS6 is supposed to be the cats meow)
Keep on going to PS if needed for powerful editing.
The advantages of each step are quite obvious. The native software does a considerably better job in noise reduction. I have run test after test and even at ISO 200 with easy conditions, the native software blows away Adobe's conversion.
ACR has come a long way, and it being endlessly reversible gives me a lot of safety. The tools may not be as fancy, but once delved into, they are easier to use and powerful, and unlike LR you always know where your file is.
PS is well…… we all know its powers
It may sound like we are splitting hairs, and we are, but once I learned how much better RAW conversion is when Adobe ISN't allowed to do it, I was convinced.
Get CS5 or 5.5 or even 6 is coming out. You don't need Lightroom, but its great if you want. CS comes with Bridge, Adobe Camera Raw, and Photoshop. If you can wait for black friday you can get it cheap. CS is the industry standard around the world.
