This effect is called vignetting and is usually considered undesirable. It is usually caused by the use of a normal thickness (as opposed to a slim) filter on a wide angle lens. It can be duplicated in ps by a few different techniques. The simplest method would be to use the burning tool and darken the edges (always create a duplicate layer to do this on). Then use the opacity slider to adjust (fine tune) the effect. The duplicate layer can always be thrown out if you don't like it or go back using the history window.

You can do this one of 2 ways in a dark room:

1. Use a difussing tool and concentrate around the edges.

2. Use your hands to create a negative halo around the pic.

If you are using digital media, most photo software will have some sort of toll to create that effect.

1. Add a new blank layer to the image

2. Use the elliptical marquee tool to draw where you want the vignette.

3. Go to Select>Feather and enter the radius to make it fade (something like 20-30 to start, depending on the size of the image)

4. Hit Shift+Ctrl+I or go to Select>Inverse

5. Go to Edit>Fill and fill with black

6. Hit Ctrl+D to deselect.

Because it's on another layer, you can adjust the opacity of your vignette or add a layer mask to adjust it.

In actual photos, you would cut a piece of paper to the desired shape and hold it between the enlarger and the print when exposing the print. (you have to move it back and forth so you get a gradual light to dark effect)

Usually this effect is done in reverse, the paper has a hole in the middle that allows the image to get to the print. It's called a vignette effect.

Noe I just saved the picture to my pictures in my computer and I can use my photo shop or photo filter and by using the filter attachment, make the photo appear to have dark lines.

most photoshop programs will do that with a simple click. Just experiment a little. They are easy to use.

Just about any commercial photo-edditing program will do that.

Photoshop, paintshop, MS digital Image, etc...
