I was asked to take engagement photos for this couple but I am new to the business part of photography. I was wondering how much photographers usually charge? What is a good guideline to go by for charging people?

I charge around $400 for engagement but usually sell it as a wedding package with a discount on engagement. It also depends if you're going to sell prints or if you're going to sell the rights to the customer. mpix.com is my favorite print company. You can check out their prices online. Always keep prints in mind. I sell print packages and then the copyright on the photos for extra. Many photographers do not agree with releasing rights to the images.

It really depends on the photographer. Some maj charge 50 while others may charge 500. It really depends on what you feel your photography and time is worth.

When deciding on how much to price your sessions think of the travel, how much photos you will provide, the editing time, the actual session time, if you will be selling prints or giving a DVD. If this is your first time, I wouldn't recommend charging too much unless you are completely confident in your abilities both as a photographer and as a business person!

In your case I would charge 75-100+

I do engagement sessions for free for couples that book me to do their wedding photography (since they're paying me a lot of money to do their wedding, it's the decent thing to do). For stand-alone engagement sessions, outdoors on location, I usually start at $499, and it varies a bit from there depending on how long the session will be, how far away it is, what kind of delivery medium they want, etc. etc. etc. For you, I would suggest you do several sessions for *free* first. Maybe ask them to cover gas money since it's far away, but that's it. Use them to build experience, and only start charging when you know you can deliver a good product that's worth what you charge. And while you *should* learn about copyright law, for these first sessions just make it easy -- have the couple sign a standard "model release" (dozens are on the 'net), then give them the images in digital form on a DVD, along with a form you've signed saying they can use them any way they want to. Peace.

In order to figure out your rates, you should determine your costs of doing business. For example, you will need a state and local business license, insurance, and you will need to pay self employment taxes.

High end photographers might charge $10,000 or more for a portrait session, while the average is under $1,000. A photographer who is just starting out might only charge $100 per hour.

I was just watching a DateLine-NBC show about a scamming photographer--that charged 1000-$$

I did a complete wedding--for 200-$$/

I still have some more things I'd like to deliver to the newly weds--but I think they only want what they got so far../I never got to create the Full Movie Version--of their wedding..

They aren't returning my phone calls../so I'll just wait some more time../

It all depends on the state you are in because in Washington State it is not required to be a licensed business to do freelance photography so you can charge.

Have you seen her work? If you like them--then that's quite low. If the subjects look uncomfortable, etc. and if ** you ** are uncomfortable when you look at those photos, then go to a pro.

Do you have a valid business license? Do you have a tax ID number? Do you have liability insurance? If not, you shouldn't be charging anything.
