And smile detection my camera has face detection and it seems pretty pointless.

Since point and shoot cameras have no manual focus function, "Face detection " is built in so the camera automatically focuses on the faces of people in image rather than the center of the viewfinder. The idea is to keep the face in focus as it is the most important part (it's the eyes, really) if you are shooting people close-range.
