I am very interested in photography but I am not sure how to proceed. I want to learn more about photography, how to take good photos, how to pose, lighting, camera's - digital and film, etc., and I have been looking into schools. On the one hand there are school that only offer classes and no certificate or diploma and are not accredited. On the other hand there are schools like the Art Institute that offer training in all aspects and offer degree programs. Would I only need a portfolio type thing to show my work and therefore I can attend just classes without gaining a degree, or should I have the paper that says I completed schooling? Does this make sense? Please help. Thanks. :)

It depends on who is doing the hiring. Some art directors feel more comfortable knowing that you are an Art Institute grad, while others will only care about a killer portfolio and references from past clients. Which is a bit of a catch 22 - how do you get the first clients that will give you the references for the following clients? A degree always helps. In general, get the best training you can find, do a fantastic job for your clients and always be working on your portfolio.

While you might be able to luck out getting an assistant position. Your likely not going to find real work without that degree, and maybe not even then.

I graduated back in August with a Bachelor's degree. I had already opened my own studio a year before, and I have to say it has been hard going. So when I graduated I decided to close my studio and see if I can work for someone else. In a 50 mile radius there is about 60 photographers and only 3 gave me an interview and 0 gave me a job.

Anyways depending on what kind of photographer you want to be will depend on if you need that degree. A photojournalist will need that degree as he/she will likely not make it in the door. If your going the Portrait or Commercial routes you definitely need training, it's much easier to master things such as lighting with the proper training, before you set out trying to get that photographer's job.

You ask plenty of relatively well questions. I desire the web was once round earlier than I began tuition. I could of requested the identical questions. Here are my solutions: Should I trouble to take the time to get into the picture layout discipline with no measure? Yes, however you will have to paintings on a measure whilst. You could make a portfolio to exhibit abilities purchasers and in addition earn a measure. Be formidable and do each. Do you settle that it's extra main to expand a robust portfolio than to have an outstanding resume and tuition schooling heritage? I see your good judgment and it's viable however this is the change. If you cross to tuition you are going to be taught from many exclusive academics and feature a measure that suggests you'll make a dedication and comply with by way of. On the opposite hand if you do not cross to tuition you are going to pretty much instruct your self. A tuition schooling will deliver you extra advantage from exclusive view elements. You will actually have a measure. Society respects tuition levels. It is solely the best way it's. I don't suppose it's going to difference. Yes, there are exceptions to the whole lot however you are not able to cross unsuitable in case you cross to tuition and practice your self. Do employers REALLY care extra approximately skillability than credentials? Will they care that my instructor wrote in a latest advice letter for me that "the arena of visible layout demands extra folks like her"? Will they care that I'm a praised pupil or will they simply wish any one who went to tuition? Credentials support. A tuition schooling is a well factor. You can use normal feel in plenty of matters. What in case you had been hiring for a assignment and a couple of folks implemented. One went to Penn State and had a first-rate portfolio and the opposite one was once self taught and had a first-rate portfolio. You could absolutely decide on Penn State with a first-rate portfolio. There is plenty of pageant in the market and also you have to keep marketable and aggressive. You additionally have to placed your self in truly international occasions. Here is why tuition is well. Let's say Company XYZ demands a brand new print and on-line crusade for his or her new automobile that's popping out they usually wish to arrive a designated age organization. Let's additionally say that you just did a assignment like this in tuition. You could have already got a heritage in it. These are the forms of matters that you just paintings on in tuition. Projects headquartered on truly international occasions. Let's say you taught your self, what could you are saying? Is an agency more likely to rent a character only in the near past out of prime university? Yes, if there portfolio is relatively well they usually see abilities. What variety of change will it make if I paintings an apprenticeship at a layout organization? Do they even generally tend to rent apprentices as specific staff ultimately? I would not use the phrase apprentice. I could say intern. Yes, layout businesses rent interns. Apprentice sounds out of date or it could be greater used for exclusive forms of labor.
