My current computer has built in slots for variouls memory, or flash cards. I just pull out my camera's flash card and plug it in to my computer. My system offers various ways to upload the images, but I just use Windows explorer to drag and drop the files into my hard drive. I have created folders in my "My Pictures" directory for this purpose.

Once the files are transfered, I check to make sure the images loaded properly, then I can just delete the files in the card and I can put it back in my camera, clean and empty.

If your computer does not have built in card reader slots, you can find many card readers, most of them able to read various formats, pretty cheap at most computer, office supply stores and even at many department and drug store racks. I have seen them, on sale, for as little as five dollars. You just plug these into a convenient USB slot. You don't need any additional software to upload these files. In most cases, you don't need any special software to "read" or see the pictures on your monitor.

You DO need some kind of software to "edit" them. Photoshop is a popular example, but there are many others available.

Easiest way is to just connect up the camera to the USB port as you have been. When you power up the camera your PC should then recognise the memory card. You should be able to see it as a drive in My Computer (assuming you ar Windows based) It's then a simple matter of opening up that drive and subsequent directories until you come to the one with all the pics in and copying them to your PC hard drive.

As far as editing goes. It depends on how complex you want to get. If you want to keep things simple, MS Picture it, which is part of MS Works, is reasonable. A really good freeware application is GIMP. It's an open source package which has a lot of the capabilities you find in Adobe Photoshop.

just take your memory card out of camera and place it in card reader slot.maybe at side if on laptop.

\you can edit with windows live photo gallery fro example or even download picasa which is free and quite good.

That Nikon transfer seems to work when it feels like it

The easiest and fastest transfer method is to use a card reader. Then you can plug your memory card into it directly.
