The problem with DSLRs is that you don't stop there. Every DSLR owner develops GAS. That is gadget acquisition syndrome. You'll need other lenses, external flash, filters, tripod, and on and on. If you're ready for GAS then $500 should start you on your way. (I've got TONS of gas!) however, if you wish to use your money on an advanced point and shoot that will be hard to outgrow and not as prone to GAS, check out the Canon G10. Read all the reviews, it's an excellent camera. I keep one in my purse at all times and often opt to leave my DSLRs home.

Hi, If you want an entry level DSLR, I recommend the Canon EOS Rebel XS, it is a little more complicated to use. In DSLRs you have to change the lenses + everything is more manual, and you don't get much zoom with the kit lens, and long zoom lenses are expensive. For point and shoot there are compact cameras, and bigger cameras. Usually, bigger cameras offer more optical zoom, and most of the time include a digital viewfinder. For Compact Point and Shoot: Nikon Coolpix S9100 Nikon Coolpix S8100 Canon Powershot SX230HS Canon Powershot SX210 Canon Powershot S95 Canon Powershot G12 Nikon Coolpix P7000 Nikon Coolpix P300 Olympus XZ-1 Fujifilm FinePix F550EXR Fujifilm FinePix F500EXR Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX7V Sony Cyber-Shot DSC- TX100V Sony Cyber-Shot DSC- TX10 Waterproof Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 Sony Cyber-Shot DSC- WX10 Fujifilm FinePix XP30 Waterproof & GPS Nikon Coolpix S6100 Fujifilm FinePix Z90 Big Point & Shoot: Nikon Coolpix P500 Nikon Coolpix L120 Canon Powershot SX30 Fuji Finepix HS20 Fuji Finepix HS10 Panasonic Lumix FZ40 Panasonic Lumix FZ100 Sony Cybershot DSC- HX100

If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 [with a Leica lense] which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28_pg5.html

It just came out on November 4, 2008.

It's an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel digital camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HD720 quality video [Quicktime] which permits zooming while videoing skateboarding, action sports; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature and concert photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $270 at amazon.com. in the U.S.

Here's an actual handheld picture of the moon:

if you want an slr its hard to go wrong with a nice used canon ae-1

if you want a dslr the nikon d40 and canon xti are in your price range.

if you decide that an slr or dslr is too expensive with the added cost of lenses, flash, etc then its hard to beat a canon sd880 in the point and click category.

This does not seem like such a bad deal. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=17316

The price listed is full bird retail. I am sure you could find it nicely discounted at Best Buy, B&H or Adorama.

For your budget I would suggest Nikon D40 DSLR. It has 6.1MP but it take far better picture quality than get 10MP from point & shoot camera cause DSLR's are nearly 15 times larger than the sensors on point and shoot cameras. That mean the pixels are 15 times larger

If you want DSLR with 10MP you should save more and get Nikon D60 or Canon Rebel XS.Both are around $540.
