How would I go about removing shadows from a picture?

So I have this picture, but there is a shadow going across the photo, is there a way to remove that?Thanks :)

Here is my quick and dirty fix.
In the future, you might want to be mindfull of things like this before you press the shutter release.

There's plenty of detail in that area so it could certainly be selected and adjusted with Levels or Curves in Photoshop, or a gradient applied. It'll probably need the colour adjusting slightly after that too. I've done this before - not on my own shots, I wouldn't miss something like that carving through my scene! In Photoshop I'd use adjustment layers to make non-destructive changes that can be refined.
The flare along the top is pretty bad, needs covering over with material from elsewhere in the photo. It's also very poorly framed, with feet cut off. If you have the option to re-shoot, I'd start from scratch.
