I want to be able to print a black and white photo and then color parts in by hand rather than on the computer before printing them. Does anyone know what type of materials I need to be able to do this? Do I need matte paper and watercolor pencils or is there anotther option?

In my photography course, we took a black and white print, and colored them with special photo pencils. They arent THAT vibrant but they work great. You can get them in specialty camera stores, or in a art supply store.

I would buy online, Marshalls is the best brand.

I print them on matte photo paper, use a variety of mediums (oil pencil, acrylic, watercolor, gouche, etc) then scan or photograph and reprint. Sometimes you can get great effects by repeating the process 2 or 3 times in the same photo.

if you can find it, they make sets of oil paints that are meant just for this purpose. they work best on a matte finish (heavy weight!) paper and provide a nice glaze of transparent color. the only downfall is that they are fairly expensive. other options would be to use watercolor paints (lightly so as not to damage the paper) oil pastels, chalk pastels (ie rembrandt) etc.

a note for the chalk pastels... you can mix the pastel with rubbing alcohol or water to create a sort of watercolor wash with them... the advantage to doing this with rubbing alcohol is that it will dry faster so that you don't damage the paper as easily.

You can use watercolor, acrylic paints, pastels, colored pencils and various dye, even tissue paper - the easiest way is using colored pencils.
