First photo class assignment. :) Our teacher wants us to take a "detail portrait". (I quoted from the paper she gave us)
Could someone give me an example of what one is? Thanks!

The detail is in the texture of the skin, what the person does for a profession will possibly show in that (Manual worker/Office worker), what clothes they like to wear.... That sort of thing.
In the following portrait, you might think that I should have told my subject to remove his dark glasses, but he does wear them quite a lot and also you can see some detail of where we are in the reflections - a boatyard, with a boat trailer behind me. Chris is a manual worker.

I will assume the assignment's purpose is to have your own interpretation of what "detail portrait" is, thus allowing you to use your own creativity. So start with 'portrait', and then try to express what "detail" in a portrait means to you, (could be detail texture like a macro shot, or a very side-lit portrait of an old person to show aging features, or even a portrait that has extremely shallow DOF and focused only on one eye.)

Portrait photography is the capture by means of photography of the likeness of a person or a small group of people (a group portrait), in which the face and expression is predominant.

detailed portrait:
The portrait is a classic photograph designed to capture the person. Typically it is face on, but the person doesn’t necessarily have to be focused on the camera. The subject can be distracted by something in the distance or daydreaming. They can be serious or sassy, colorful or black and white. Portraits come in many shapes and sizes.

Not necessarily a close up, but this could be a detail portrait. It doesn't mean eather that it must to very sharp or something like that,
