How do you shoot RAW files with a Canon EOS 7D?

I recently upgraded my Pentax K200D to a Canon eos 7D, and im having trouble shooting in RAW. I did a shoot, read the manual and used the function: menu> simultaneous raw, thinking that was selecting to shoot in RAW. Though when i uploaded the images to my computer, they were all JPEG files.

I still have the images on my memory card, as im wondering if there is any way to convert them to RAW files, or retrieve the RAW versions, or some other miracle. Could anyone tell me how to actually shoot in raw, and retrieve the raw files (re above) Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

No, you cant convert a JPeg to a Raw, a Raw file captures more detail than a JPeg, so therefore you cant add more detail.

To shoot in Raw, Go to Menu, Quality, and then select Raw

You cannot convert JPEG to RAW. JPEG's come out of the camera as images. RAW files are exactly what they sound like: raw files that are just files and not images. RAW files are information more than they are anything else. Maybe this can explain it better:

"A raw file is essentially the data that the camera's chip recorded along with some additional information tagged on. A JPG file is one that has had the camera apply linear conversion, matrix conversion, white balance, contrast, and saturation, and then has had some level of potentially destructive compression applied."

So RAW -> JPEG, yes. JPEG -> RAW, no.

Change your settings to actually shoot RAW.

For Canon, go to:

Menu > Quality > RAW

If you really took pictures in both RAW and jpeg, you should be able to download both. Maybe when you went to the menu and scrolled to >simultaneous raw (?), you did not press the button on the scroll wheel before exiting the menu. So you are probably shooting in jpeg only.

I don't really think you read the manual (you probably just skimmed over it), because the manual tells you exactly what to do.

I have a canon eos digital camera, and when I shoot in RAW, I can always download those files to my computer (even if I can't open them). but they are there on my computer - they just need to be converted.

I agree with Perki88. It sounds to me that you are not opening your files in a RAW conversion program. You do realize that RAW files have to be converted into a usable format don't you? They are not viewable in many programs that will display a Jpeg. I know your camera came with the Canon software named Digital Photo Professional. This is what you have to download in order to open and convert your RAW files. There are a ton of other RAW conversion programs that can be used, but you have the Canon software right there in the box to use for free.

CS2 was in existence LONG before the new 7D, so I am not surprised Photoshop will not read the RAW data. Simply go to the Adobe website and look for ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) updates to download so your version of PS will read the 7D files. Also, as stated in another answer, you have what you need right in the camera box to covert the files. Just install the Canon software, convert the RAW files, then open them in PS. I can understand though if you don't want to have to do two steps instead of one, so in that case, just update your version of PS to read the 7D RAW files. steve

It sounds as if you set your camera to jpeg plus raw and the only thing you are reading is the jpeg. Perhaps you did not use the software that came with your camera that reads the raw data. Perhaps you need to download that from Adobe.
