The problem you're having is caused by your lens, not your camera. The Canon 18-55mm zoom has a minimum focusing distance of 9.84 inches. Get any closer to your subject and the lens can't focus and your picture will be blurry - out of focus.

If you're serious about macro photography then you need to buy a true macro lens. Two to consider are the Canon EF-S 60mm f2.8 Macro USM and the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM. Both have the ability of a 1:1 (life-sized) reproduction ratio which means if your spider measures 20mm long then it will be 20mm long on your sensor.

Totally ignore any zoom lens with the word "macro" as part of its description. They aren't macro by any stretch of the imagination, seldom giving more than a 1:4 (1/4 life-sized) reproduction ratio. So your 20mm long spider would only be 5mm long on your sensor.

At B&H - http://www.bhphotovideo.com - the Canon 60mm macro is $469.00 and the Canon 100mm macro is $599.00. Both have an additional $40.00 "Instant Savings" from B&H if purchased by Sat., June 2 ($429.00 and $559.00). Both have free USA shipping.

Your camera does not have a macro setting. You buy a macro lens to shoot macro.

Each lens has its own minimum focus distance, which is the distance objects need to be from the front of the lens to be in focus. Any nearer and it will be blurred.

The alternatives to buying a macro lens are:

Extension tubes, go between your camera and lens. It reduces the minimum focus distance, but you will lose auto-focus with cheap ones.

Or 'reverse lens macro' which is holding any lens back-to-front over your camera. Very cheap and a good skill to learn.

There is no macro setting in the camera. You have just set the "close-up" setting - it's not a macro setting. To take macro shots you need a macro lens, or extension tubes, or bellows, or a lens reversal ring.

You'll need a macro lens for that.

Yes. Your camera will accept all Canon EF and EF-S lens mounts.
