Question:
Black and White photography: How do I get rid of the gray in my photos?

When I convert my photos to B&W on Photoshop, there is a lot of gray and not so much BLACK and WHITE. Is there a way on photoshop to make it pure black and white? I adjust the whites in levels however, it makes the subjects in my photo have really bright faces. What settings do I change on my Nikon D80 (if there's nothing I can do on photoshop).

Thanks for any help.

Gray is part of black and white. If you want Black and white open it up in paint and save it as a monochrome bitmap.

Using a Selective Color Adjustment Layer is a very good way to get great controll over the contrast in a black&white image. Google or check tutorialized.com for tutorials.

use the Posteize, Stamp or the Threshold filters, no gray, just hard black and white. This is not considered black and white by the way; just odd shapes that resemble a picture.

If you have the latest version of Photoshop, go to Image->Adjust->Black and White.

Move the colour sliders around to get the effect you want. You could also play around with the 'presets' in this window. Find one you like and then adjust it further.

start with a well exposed image, use the contrast and brightness control to fiddle it after you have turned it to monochrome in the channel mixer and adjusted the RGB to give a nice punchy contrast to tune

there is no real quick fix answer except learn exposure and enhancing bettererer
