Question:
Wedding Photography as a future career?

I've done some research and I've noticed that photographers nowadays are struggling to find work, but what about wedding photography? I'm a senior in high school, and I love photography (specifically portraits), and I want to do it as a career, but not if I will end up unemployed. Thoughts on wedding photography to make a living? Also, what's the college process like to be one? I also have my own business, I take pictures of families, kids and even birthday parties, so I'm sort of "experienced" with clients and such. Opinions and tips?

I'm not sure how long you mean by "later in life", but pursue your dreams for the future by acting on them now. I have done photography for several weddings and found that its not my cup of tea, mainly due to the pressure of getting everything just right. But I am working on a nature photography business while doing something else now. When it takes off, I should be financially ready for it. I got into photography several years ago by attending a class at a local botanical garden. From there I joined a local camera club. This club had monthly meetings with guest speakers giving all sorts of interesting photographic topics. I also found several good books on photography basics. One of the best was titled "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. Amazon sells it for about $17. It gives an excellent overview of the basics of photography and is an easy read with a lot of relevant examples. You might also look into short term photographic studies such as those offered with the Rocky Mountain School of Photography (RMSP). You'll find them on line and they offer a variety of classes from a few days long to several months. Photography, like any creative occupation, is not an easy way to make a living. However, it can be a great hobby or a secondary job, until business gets good. Start drumming up contacts and business saavy now, it will really help you later!

Wedding photographers can make good money. It is generally very difficult to make money solely on your photography business. If you would go to school I would recommend getting a business degree because this is where many photographers fall short they are creative and create great images but they can't handle business or money. I would also look into teaching photography. You could work as a photography teacher and do you photography business on the side.
