A timer hooked-up to the enlarger is a basic necessity. However, you can go to the hardware store and construct a hand-held off/on switch. You will also need a clock with sweep second hand that is illuminated. If too bright, cover with red or yellow transparent holiday rapping stuff.
To proceed:
Insert the negative and compose and focus. Compose for an 8 x 10 inch print.
Set the lens aperture in the middle of its range, likely f/11.
Under safelight conditions, place a test strip of paper so it falls in about the middle of the projected image.
Test expose a strip at 4 seconds, another at 6 seconds, another at 8 seconds etc.
Develop the test strips by time, not visual. Time in the developer will be 90 seconds.
If all too light, double the suggested starting times. If all too dark cut the times in half.
You truly need an enlarger timer to proceed in comfort. Why not ask Santa deliver one and put it in you stocking.
Best of luck
